The Experience

Today, a large part of Otrobanda is beautifully restored. As soon as you cross the famous Queen Emma Bridge, built in 1888 by the US Consul Leonard B. Smith, you are greeted by the colorful facades of the waterfront bars, restaurants and shops.

Join in on the celebrations, markets and other activities often being held on the large square right at the foot of the bridge, Brion Plein. Or explore the beautifully restored fort- Riffort Village- with exceptional views of the water, five star restaurants, museums and art galleries, live music, low, middle and high-end shopping and private beach. Bargain hunters will have a field day exploring the many small shops selling clothing, souvenirs and electronics in the main street called Breedestraat and its side streets and alleys.

Meet the town’s colorful residents under the viaduct or marvel at the beauty of the district’s Dutch colonial architecture at Kurá Hulanda. Learn more about the island’s history at one of the several museums: the Curaçao Museum, the Fort Church, the Curaçao Maritime Museum and Museum Kurá Hulanda. After a busy day exploring the district, grab a show at Teatro Luna Blou or La Tentashon. Or watch the ships enter and leave the harbor at one of the waterfront terraces while sipping a cocktail. We recommend taking a late afternoon guided walk through the historical part of Otrobanda where you can experience life in the 19th, 20th and 21st century. Want to experience Otrobanda?
